Velma Galger Hernandez was born on January 28,1928 and died peacefully in her Sun City home on August 25, 2017. Velma had spent the previous evening in the company of her beloved church community. Velma was born in Waynesville, Illinois, spent her childhood on farms in South Dakota and Minnesota, and moved to the big city at 17. Velma married John Galger in 1947 and raised her family of 6 children in Milwaukee. After John’s death, Velma married Stanley Hernandez. In 1986 Velma and Stan moved to Sun City to avoid Milwaukee winters. Velma is survived by her two sisters: Arlene Callander and Vera Klein. She is also survived by her six children and their partners: Dennis and Linda Galger, Jim and Carlin Galger, Jean Galger, Gary Galger and Patricia Reilly, Rick Galger and Richard Sandoval, and Linda Galger Harris. Velma will be missed by her surviving 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Velma is preceded in death by 4 of her siblings: John, Mary, Chuck, and Tom; her first husband John Galger to whom she was married for 38 years; and her second husband Stanley Hernandez to whom she was married for 32 years. Velma will be remembered with fondness and gratitude by her family, friends, and church community. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9 at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center 12420 N. 103rd Ave. Sun City, AZ 85351. A luncheon in Velma’s honor will follow the service.
