Thomas J. Mannion, 86, of Sun City West. AZ, died July 10, 2015. Son of Irish immigrants from Clifden, Ireland, Paddy (the Yank) Mannion and Margaret (Peggy) Berry, “Tommy” was born in New York City in 1929. He served from 1951-53 in the Army during the Korean War and then from 1954-87 in the New York City Police Department as a patrolman and then as a detective. During his NYPD career he was cited several times for honors, including Policeman of the Month on two occasions and received more than a dozen medals for outstanding service. On one occasion, he came upon a Manhattan hotel robbery in progress and, barehanded, subdued a gunman in the process of pistol whipping the hotel manager. Tommy married Margaret Kennedy in 1954 and was father to Kevin, Thomas, and Sean. In 1993 Tommy and Margaret moved to Sun City West. Tommy is survived by Margaret, their three sons and their wives, and his seven grandchildren. He was always cherished by his sisters Joan Ketchum (who preceded him in death), Mary Buczweski, Rita Flores, and his brother, Paddy. He will be remembered for his sense of commitment to “do the right thing,” his extraordinary storytelling and sense of humor. He will be lovingly remembered forever for the joy he brought to his family. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. with Rosary service at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 14818 W. Deer Valley Rd., Sun City West, AZ.
