Robert Tatum, 67, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on November 19, 2024, at Banner University Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 24, 1956, Rob was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Judyth (Cole) Tatum.
Rob is survived by his wife of 18 years Deborah “Deb” Simmons; his sons Matt, Kyle, Ryan (Jamie), Travis, and Scott (Rachel); Daughter-in-law Jessica, grandchildren Ben, Dakoda, and Grayson; brothers Daniel and Charlie; niece Kelli and great-niece Lacey; and best friend Bobby. Rob also embraced the role of “dog dad” to Sassie, Snowflake and Holly-Mae.
Rob grew up in southern Oregon and he moved to Arizona as a young adult. He proudly enlisted in the Army National Guard and rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major, serving in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm and Yuma/Tucson sectors on Operation Jump Start. He received several medals including three Bronze Star’s for meritorious service in a combat zone. Rob wore many hats during his military career, serving in an engineering unit and also served as a heavy machinery mechanic, but his passion throughout his career was taking care of soldiers in every way possible. He honorably retired from the Arizona Army National Guard after more than 30 years of devoted service. In retirement, Rob cherished numerous memories with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing trips to Woods Canyon Lake.
Rob was adored by many and will be remembered for his infectious smile, laughter, and warmth. His ability to uplift others and his love for family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He was a true leader and an inspiration to the people around him.
The Service will take place on Tuesday, November 26 at 11AM at the Menke Funeral Center 12420 N 103RD AVE., SUN CITY, AZ 85351 with a Reception to follow hosted at Kathy Lippman’s house at 7639 W. Monte Lindo, Peoria, AZ 85383
