Robert Carl Johnston

Robert (Rob) Carl Johnston, age 71, passed away March 8th, in Peoria, AZ, surrounded by his family. Rob was born in 1953 in Coldwater, MI to William R. (Dick) and Elizabeth (Betty) Johnston. The family relocated from South Haven, MI to Eau Claire, WI when Rob was a teenager. He met his wife Patricia (Pat) Fugate while attending Central Junior High School. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage together.

Rob and Pat built a wonderful life together that was filled with love and laughter. Rob loved fishing and hunting and had a great appreciation for animals and nature. His family knows that now wherever he is, he is covered in dog hair. Rob worked hard and was a great provider for his family. He always had a funny story or inappropriate joke to share and never met a stranger. He wore his heart on his sleeve and would have given that sleeve away if someone needed it.

Rob worked for Sysco Food Service and many of his customers became his friends. Later, he followed his dream and became a realtor. He enjoyed selling homes and especially working with first time home buyers as he looked out for them like they were his own children.

In 2010, Rob suffered a devastating stroke. Rob was a fighter and never stopped working on his rehab. He had a remarkable, positive attitude that was infectious to everyone around him. He was an inspiration to many and certainly never lost his sense of humor.

Rob and Pat made the decision to leave the Eau Claire area for a warmer climate in 2019. They moved to Peoria, AZ. They spent endless hours in their pool together and enjoyed exploring their new surroundings. They loved taking drives together to see how lost they could get. Thankfully Google Maps helped them find their way back home.

Rob is survived by his wife, his son David (DonMichael), his daughter Susan, his beloved granddaughters Piper and Marlo, his brother Thomas (Phyllis) and sister Barbara Lager. He is also survived by his life-long friends Mike Gallagher and Larry Kumferman. They never were too busy to talk and give Rob the best gift of all, the gift of their time.

Per Rob’s request a private service was held in Peoria, AZ. Memorials or donations should be directed to your local food bank, local school lunch fund or animal rescue shelter.
