Richard S. (Dick) Downing, of Sun City West, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. He was 93 years old. He is survived by his wife, Katy; his children Rick Downing, and wife Sue, of Anchorage, AK, Kathy Ingerson, and husband Chuck, of Lynchburg, VA; and his sister-in-law Beulah Christie, of Sun City West. Dick was born in Lima, MT, on December 15, 1920. After graduating from high school in Lima, he joined the U.S. Army in 1940. He was stationed at Schoelfield Barracks in Pearl Harbor and fought in the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was transferred to Texas and Oklahoma and was honorably discharged in 1945. Dick married Kathryn (Katy) Maria Roll on March 28, 1948 in Bozeman, MT, and moved to Alaska to raise his family. He worked in construction and was a member of Operating Engineers 302. After retiring in 1985, Dick and Katy decided it was time to sight see and bought a motor home in which they toured the United States finally settling in Sun City West in December, 1999. Dick will be laid to rest with military honors in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at 11 am.
