Merle Getten

Merle Getten, 91, died November 27, 2008 at Hospice of the Valley. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota April 5, 1917 and was a graduate of University of Minnesota. Merle enlisted in the Marines and served in the South Pacific in World War II as a Captain. After discharge, he returned to Minneapolis to work for Red Owl Stores Inc. for 21 years and became Vice President of Retail Operations retiring in 1967. Merle then went into business for himself in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for 10 years and then managed Country Clubs in Hastings and Grand Island, Nebraska. He became a resident of Sun City, Arizona in 1988 and a member of First Methodist Church and Sun City Country Club. Merle was an avid golfer all his life, serving as Captain of the golf team during school. He and his father won many Father-Son tournaments in Minneapolis. He was South Dakota State Amateur Champion in 1955. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ardis Getten. He is survived by his 2 children Jim Getten Linda of Oregon children Misty Matt and Nathan and Paula Johnson Jerry of Minnesota children Bryn and Lane. He is also survived by wife Polly Getten and her children David Sue of West Point, New York children James and Michelle and Barbara Thomas of Glendale and children Travis Sara and Brooke. Services will be held in Northfield, Minnesota, Memorials to Hospice of the Valley 1510 E Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.
