Former Alexandria resident Max W. Tulowitzky, 85, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at his residence in Peoria, Arizona following an extended illness.
Max was born on June 30, 1935 in Alexandria to Eric and Leota (Goins) Tulowitzky. Max was a graduate of Alexandria High School-Class of 1953. He delivered newspapers when he was in the 3rd grade. At the age of 15, Max went to work at an Alexandria Supermarket. Working in all of store’s departments, Max finished as produce department manager. In 1957, he married Mary Imogene Gaither and they were married for 61 years until her passing in 2018. Max started as an apprentice pipe fitter at Delco-Remy in 1960. He specialized as a pneumatic technician and retired in 1983. In 1969, Max was struck by lightning and was told he would never walk again. The Lord and Max overcame that. In 1984, he was given a medical disability and was told using his legs was over. Again, the Lord and Max proved the doctors wrong! While at Delco, he was Chairman of the United Way campaign for skilled trades for 3 years. Max loved young people and baseball. He loved to coach Little League, babe Ruth and church softball teams. His combined record was 335 – 30. He was President of the Alexandria Town and Country League for 12 years. He received many awards as a Cub Scout leader. Max was one of two Indiana residents to be appointed by Senator Richard Lugar to the American Security Council and the National Advisory Board in Washington, DC. With a musical heritage from his mother’s family, Max also invested himself deeply in church music activities. He directed church choirs for 35 years and was named in the Who’s Who of Special Events in the choir category in 1989. For health reasons, Max and Imogene moved to Arizona in 1990. They attended the Glendale Church of the Nazarene where he directed handbell choirs for 17 years and received the Distinguished Service Award of the church. He was a member of the Fiesta Bowl Board for 3 years. Max was found to be faithful in his service to his community, his country, his church and his Lord.
