Mary Flanigan (Gilbert)

December 31, 1969 — March 31, 2016

89, died peacefully at home March 26, 2016 after a battle with COPD. Born May 2, 1926 in Toledo, OH to Harold (Hal) and Marie Gilbert, she graduated from DeVilbiss High School (Toledo) and went on to receive her degree as a Registered Nurse from Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing and Hygiene in Detroit, MI before marrying Russell Flanigan a DeVilbiss classmate. She continued her career specializing in geriatrics in both New York and New Jersey, and even after moving to Orlando, FL in 1980. A devoted Christian woman who dedicated her life to helping and serving others, she taught us about "Random Acts of Kindness" before they officially existed. After retiring, Mary was active with her volunteering for Friends of the Library and continued to pursue her favorite pastimes of reading, sewing, creating thoughtful gifts, and working jigsaw puzzles. In July 2006, she ventured across the country and found her new home in Sun City, AZ where her positive attitude and sunny disposition made her many new friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Russ (1985) and a son Robert (2016). She is survived by her daughters Lidell Jacobson (Gary) of Goodyear, AZ, Margaret Biroscak (Vince) of The Villages, FL, and her son Kevin Flanigan (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Comprehensive Hospice and Palliative Care and Laurie, Diana and Nikki for their loving care. A private interment will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Florida.
