Marris Daniel Clayborn, an Admirable Man
In the quiet town of Bluefield, West Virginia, a man of exceptional character and warmth was born on August 26, 1940. Marris Daniel Clayborn, known fondly as Papa by those who loved him, lived a life marked by an unwavering commitment to family, community, and the simple joys of life. His journey on this earth came to a peaceful close on August 23, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona, where he had spent the majority of his life. Marris passed away due to complications from COPD and other medical issues, enveloped by the love of his family in the home that had been his haven for six decades.
Marris's early years were filled with the love of his parents, Callie Gussie Clayborn and Bascom Slemp Clayborn, who instilled in him the values of kindness and respect that would become the hallmark of his life. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Ida Mae Clayborn, who was his partner in all things and mother to their cherished children. His siblings, Betty Cochran, Carolyn Gregg, Barbara Wimmer, James Clayborn, Joanne Sykes, Kenny Clayborn, and Joel Clayborn, also preceded him in passing, leaving behind memories of a family bound tightly by love and laughter.
Yet Marris' legacy continues through his surviving siblings, Dina Clayborn-Cochran (Al), Roy Wimmer, Linda Dober, Debbie Ritenour (Joe), John Clayborn (Lois), and Rodney Clayborn (Shelly), who carry with them the spirit of their brother's gentle guidance. His children, Kevin Clayborn (Robin), and Rebecca Zielinski, remain as testaments to his love and dedication as a father. His eight grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren, along with one more great-grandchild on the way, are the living embodiments of his generosity and warmth.
Marris and Ida Mae began their journey as husband and wife on the crisp winter day of January 8, 1960, in Fairfax, Virginia. Shortly after, they embarked on a new adventure, moving to Arizona in 1964 with their two small children. There, Marris poured his heart into his work, managing the A. J. Bayless Market and serving as a supervisor for the Pendergast School District. Alongside Ida Mae, he co-owned the Blue Ribbon Ceramic Shop, where his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit shone.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Marris was a man of many interests and talents. An avid bowler, he competed in numerous tournaments, leaving behind a legacy of trophies and cherished memories with teammates. His passion for woodworking was a bond shared with his grandson, Lance, as they crafted homemade Christmas presents that became treasured keepsakes. His best friend, Waldo, and his wife, JoAnn, were frequent companions in his tinkering projects, and their visits were bright spots in his days.Even as Marris faced the challenge of Macular Degeneration and progression of his other illnesses, his perseverance never wavered. He adapted and continued to engage with the world around him, inspiring all who knew him with his resilience. Marris, lovingly called Dad and Papa, set the standard for what it means to be a Godly man, a loyal husband, a nurturing father, and a steadfast friend.
His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his example of a life well-lived will continue to guide and comfort his family and friends. Marris Daniel Clayborn's story is one of unwavering love, enduring strength, and the quiet dignity of a life devoted to others. He will be dearly missed, but the memories he created will forever be a beacon of hope and joy for generations to come.
