Mark S. Zavodny, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, in Surprise, Arizona. He was born on March 23, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, marking the beginning of a life filled with service, love, and family.
Mark's commitment to his country began at the young age of 17 when he joined the Army. Over the course of 18 years, he rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class while serving under combat conditions in Korea, specifically in the DMZ. After his honorable military service, he transitioned to a fulfilling career with the Department of Justice, where he worked as a records technician for an additional ten years before retiring for the second time.
Beyond his impressive career, Mark is remembered for his generous spirit and unwavering kindness. He was known to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, demonstrating the true essence of giving. While his exterior often reflected a rough and tough demeanor, those closest to him knew him as a big teddy bear with a heart full of love. His wife, Jenny Zavodny, was the center of his universe, and he often expressed that marrying her was the best decision he ever made.
Mark took great pride in his children, Jason (Mary Jane) Zavodny and Veronica (Chris) High, celebrating their accomplishments and cherishing the individuals they had become. He also adored his grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his heart. He could often be found donning his grill master hat, cooking for family gatherings, or sharing moments outdoors, fishing. The laughter and joy shared with his grandchildren, as they climbed on him in play, brought him immense happiness. Mark exemplified love; moments spent dancing with his wife to their wedding song, “Always and Forever,” highlighted the depth of their bond. His emotional responses during prayers and infectious sense of humor inspired those around him, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Jenny Zavodny; his son, Jason (Mary Jane) Zavodny; his daughter, Veronica (Chris) High; and his cherished grandchildren, Michael, Brianna, Cameryn, Jada, Mariah, Simone, and Zoey. He leaves behind his brothers Jerry Zavodny and Phillip Zavodny, his sister Debra Franco, and his brother Richard Budzyn.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Angeline Budzyn; his step-father, Richard Budzyn; his biological father Edward Zavodny; his sister, Donna Peters; and a grandson, Jeremy Rivera.
A visitation to honor Mark's life will be held on January 28, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center in Sun City, Arizona. A Mass in his memory will take place on January 29, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church in Glendale, followed by a graveside service at Holy Cross Cemetery in Avondale at 12:30 PM.
