Leonard McKinley Quarrels was born on September 13, 1935 in Manilla, Philippines to James Leonard and Victorina Quarrels. He went to be with the Lord on January 26, 2017. He was preceded in death by his brother James Lawrence Quarrels. Leonard was born in the Philippines in the pre-war years. In 1942 when World War II began, the family had to flee into the jungles to escape the Japanese. When the war was over the family came to America on the USS Monterey. He completed his education and earned his Associate of Arts degree from Riverside Community College. At the age of 17 he joined the Marines and was stationed in the Philippines and Korea. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Combat Engineer. After the war he had a successful career as a Building Inspector for the City of Ontario, California and he retired after 20 years of service. In 1990 he met his wife Mary and they were married in July 2000. He will be laid to rest with full Military Honors. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Leonard Quarrels Jr., his sister Norma Quarrels Smith, daughter-in-law Erica Quarrels, his granddaughters Avery Quarrels and Jillian Quarrels, and step-daughter Dawn Douglass, and her children Billy Douglass and Vanessa Bishop. A visitation / viewing will be held on Tuesday January 31st from 3-6 pm at Menke Funeral Home. 12420 North 103rd Avenue, Sun City Arizona. A graveside Service will be held on Wednesday February 1st at 1:00 pm at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, Arizona.
