Leo Sasseville

Leo N. Sasseville 87, passed away June 13, 2014. He was born in Manchester, NH on August 10, 1926 to Napoleon and Flora (Pincince) Sasseville. He married Claire St. Cyr, May 28, 1949, celebrating 65 years last month. They had two children, a son, Lawrence (deceased 2011) and a daughter, Catherine. Leo wanted to follow his father's career in the navy, joined as soon as he turned 17 in 1943 and was assigned to the USS Lexington in the Pacific. He was severly injured when Kamikazi planes hit the ship. He was honored to receive the Purple Heart. Both Leo and Claire lived in South Hooksett most of their life. He was very active in the South Hooksett Volunteer Fire Dept. and became the Fire Chief. When a permanent position was opened in Laconia, NH for a Deputy Chief. The family moved to Lakeport, NH and Leo became their first Training Officer for Laconia Fire Dept. until his retirement after 20 years service. He managed the Laconia Fire Equipment Store until he was ready to officially retire. The thought of warmer weather brought them to Sun City, Arizona. Leo shortly joined the Sun City Fire Dept. as a volunteer Fire Inspector for the next 20 years. Wherever Leo moved he started a Boy Scout Troop. First in South Hooksett, he formed Troop 292 and the move to Lakeport began Troop 146. Then came Leadership Training arriving in Arizona. Leo was honored to be the Fire Chief for two Boy Scout Jamborees. He was proud to have the Wood Badge and the Silver Beaver Awards. Leo was a faithful member of the Laconia Kiwanis Club since 1971 and upon arrival to Arizona joined the Agua Fria Kiwanis Club becoming known as the song leader. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City, AZ. Catholic Services will be at St. Joachim and St. Anne Church, 11625 N. 111th Ave., Sun City, AZ on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 11 AM. Burial services will be held at the National Cemetery at a later date. The family wishes to thank the staff at Arizona Buttes Assisted Living in Peoria for their loving care of our husband and father. We cannot thank Hospice of the Valley enough times for the compassionate care given to him.
