Larry Edward Holmes, 73 of Sun City West, passed away November 7 on his way home from one of his favorite past times, NASCAR racing. Larry was born on September 16, 1947 to Bob & Mary Lou Kauffman Holmes in Jefferson City Missouri. He is survived by his son Lawrence Holmes, the love of his life Lorraine Gentile, brother Tom Holmes, stepbrother Dennis Cory (Cari), stepsister Eden Davis (Larry), nieces and nephew. He is preceded in death by his parents, stepdad Perry Coy, and stepbrother David.
After 4 years enlistment in the United State Marine Corp, Larry returned home to Jefferson City, MO & started his career in law enforcement as a patrolman. He transitioned to a local telephone company as telephone lineman then advanced to a fiber optic instructor traveling throughout the country training for Sprint. After 25 years at Sprint, he retired and resumed his law enforcement career with the county sheriff department before finally retiring in 2009.
After several years of snow-birding to Arizona, Larry became a full-time resident of Sun City West in 2015. If there was ever a greater promoter and cheerleader for Sun City West, it was Larry. He truly loved & promoted Sun City West lifestyle to everyone. Golfing was his passion and joy, he enjoyed golfing four days a week with his fellow golfing buddies. For the last five years he was the Bingo caller at Sun City Elks Lodge #2559.
Often, you would see Larry sitting on the front patio drinking his coffee and greeting every neighbor that passed by the house. We nicknamed him “The Mayor” of our neighborhood. His warmth & friendliness was endearing to many who met him and knew him.
He loved to travel with Lorraine, and they had wonderful times exploring the country and Arizona together. L & L will always be! Larry was proud to be US Marine Vet, memorial contributions may be made to Sun City Elks Lodge #2559 Honor Flight in his name.
