Kenneth L. Smith, a beloved figure known for his kindness and generosity, passed away on March 29, 2025, in Glendale, Arizona, at the age of 79. Born on May 25, 1945, in Wilde, Kentucky, Kenneth dedicated much of his life to his work and the well-being of those around him.
Ken, as he was affectionately known, graduated high school in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. He embarked on a commendable career as a lineman, initially working with Public Utilities in Ohio before moving to Arizona at the age of 27. There, he continued his service as a lineman and troubleshooter for Arizona Public Service (APS) until his well-deserved retirement. Those who knew him admired his unwavering work ethic; he worked hard not only for himself but also for others, always the first to extend a hand whenever he saw someone in need.
With an outgoing personality, Kenneth was immediately embraced by those around him. His love for the simple pleasures in life, such as nurturing birds and flowers, brought him immense joy. A passionate bird enthusiast, Kenneth raised a variety of fowl, including “Show Chickens,” English Parakeets, and Canaries.
Throughout his life, Kenneth faced numerous health challenges, enduring many hospital visits. His determination and resilience shone through as he overcame each obstacle, becoming a source of inspiration to those who cared for him. Despite his struggles, he maintained his warmth and compassion, always prioritizing the happiness of others. Kenneth wanted nothing more than to be home, surrounded by loved ones, during his final days—a wish they honored with love and respect.
He is survived by his son Kenneth Lee Smith II, two granddaughters, Kenna and Arlen, three sisters, Faye, Bonnie Lou, and Esther and two brothers, Herman and Arnold Smith, along with many affectionate nieces and nephews. His companion of 41 years, Rebecca English, stood by his side through thick and thin, sharing a special bond that exemplified true partnership. Kenneth is preceded in death by his brothers Shirley, Ed, William, Leonard, Merle and sisters Gertrude, Hazel, and Edith.
Kenneth L. Smith leaves behind a legacy of generosity, compassion, and resilience that will not be forgotten. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
