Mr. John T. “Jack” Carmody, 88, of Sun City, Arizona, died peacefully on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on January 3, 1924, he was the son of the late John T. and Barbara Elise (Bourquin) Carmody. Mr. Carmody was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School where he was a member of the Pittsfield High football and hockey teams. During World War II, Mr. Carmody served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 – 1946, mostly in the South Pacific. Mr. Carmody was a 42-year employee of General Electric and lived in Pittsfield before retiring to Arizona in 1985. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pittsfield and most recently of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church in Sun City. Mr. Carmody enjoyed athletics throughout his life, playing golf and tennis, and remained a loyal Red Sox fan. He was an avid reader and was especially interested in history and military history. He enjoyed traveling, hiking and camping, and particularly enjoyed exploring national landmarks and parks with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita O’Brien Carmody, whom he married on July 3, 1948, and with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. The Carmodys also shared a love of ballroom dancing, and attended weekly dances for over 50 years in Pittsfield and later in Sun City. For many years Mr. Carmody was an officer of the Sun City Dance Club as well as an active member of the Sun City Prides, a volunteer beautification and environmental association. He leaves his son Connie Carmody and wife Marilyn of Colorado; his daughter Mary Milek and husband Herb of Connecticut; his son Tom Carmody and Alicia Ottenberg of Arizona; his daughter Barbara Lahaie and husband Richard of Arizona; his daughter Margaret Johnston and husband Dave of Minnesota; and his daughter Ellen Carmody Roster and husband Tom of Minnesota. Among his greatest joys were spending time with his beloved ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Carmody is also survived by his brother, Cornelius Carmody of Vermont, and sisters-in-law Lucille Carmody and Mary Dojka of Massachusetts, and Pricilla Pepin of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph. A viewing will be held Thursday, Oct 4 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City. Funeral mass will be on Friday, Oct 5, at 11:30 am at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, 15800 N. Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, followed by a burial ceremony at 2:00 pm at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. Memorials may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
