John was born February 23, 1925 in Cascade Locks, Oregon to John and Essie Parker Hugill. He passed away in Sun City on October 19, 2011. He graduated from Woodburn High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U S Navy in August 1943. In February 1944 as an 18 year old kid he was wounded in action and spent the rest of his time in recovery. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. After being discharged from the Navy he enrolled at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters Degree. He retired from teaching in 1981. John was an avid golfer. He volunteered as a marshall for the PGA Phoenix Open for nineteen years. He loved gardening and was a member of the Garden Club. He volunteered for the Lutheran Thrift shop. Baseball was his love and the Yankees were his team. Highlights of his life were his six years in Mangla, West Pakistan teaching and coaching. He and Joan enjoyed traveling to many foreign countries and many cruises. He is survived by his wife Joan of 40 years, brother Jim (Nancy) of Salem, OR, brother- in-law and sister-in-law Woody and Dorothy Glad, numerous loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Essie Hugill, sisters Betty Clifford and Dorothy Bacon, brother Al. John will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will always be remembered for his kind heart. A memorial service will be held at American Lutheran Church of Sun City, 17200 N.
