BERNDT, (“WALLY”) HERBERT WALLIS – Wally died at age 86 on Friday, March 2, 2012, of natural causes. His memorial service will be held at 10 AM, Friday, March 9 at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church. He was born on December 16, 1925 in Brookings, SD, where he lived until he joined the Navy, serving during WWII as a quartermaster until 1947, when he received his honorable discharge. He received a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, and a Masters degree in Science of Watershed Management. His 25 year career as a Forester and Scientist with the US Forestry Service ended in 1972, and took e and his family around the country. After retiring, he lived in WI (Port Wing, Trego, and Chetek), Washington State (Moxie City, Port Townsend, Anacortes, Spokane and Ellensburg), Texas (Jasper), and finally Sun City, AZ. He was an avid fisherman on his beloved boat, The Salada, in the Port Townsend area. Wally was the second child of Herbert Emanel Berndt (whose parents came from Germany) and his wife Elvina Lauretta Green, (whose parents came from Hjoring, Denmark). He never knew his who was killed in a farm accident before his birth. In 1945 Wally married his wartime sweetheart, Elizabeth Florence Pellizzi of Washburn WI, and is survived by their four children: Gary, Ann, Beth, and Jim. Wally was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth and by his only sibling, Wayne. In 2008 Wally married Mary Russell Afdem of Sun City. He is survived by his wife, Mary, son Gary and his wife Gail, daughter Ann and her husband Kevin Whitehall, daughter Beth and her mate Anne, and son Jim and his wife Bonnie. He is also survived by Gary and Gail’s children (Katie and her mate P.J. and son Parker, and Becky and her husband Joshua Kirsch and their son Max), and by Ann and Kevin’s children (Derek and his wife Julie, and their children, Nathanial and Rachel, as well as daughter Jillian). Services will be held on Friday March 09th at St. Clement of Rome Church 15800 N. Del Webb Blvd Sun City, AZ 85351. Contributions in memory of Wally may be made to St. Mary’s Food Alliance, 2831 N. 31st Ave, Phoenix AZ 85009.
