George J. Hartman, 92, of Sun City died Dec. 27, 2010 in Sun City, AZ. George was born in Rankin, PA. He attended the University of Pittsburgh on a basketball scholarship, graduated with a degree in Business Administration and a Masters Degree from Cal State-Northridge. He played basketball and baseball at Pitt. George served as a Captain in the Army in WWII. A Sun City resident for over 30 years, he spent two terms on the SHOA board and two years of the RCSC board. During this time he participated in the relocation of Hwy 101 from 99th Ave. to 83rd Ave., Chaired the Sun Bowl committee for RCSC to accept it, a sewage holding pond on 99th avenue closure, served on the County Board of Adjustment, developed policies for the RCSC Board and spearheaded the “Study of the Future” in 1992. George coined the slogan “City of Volunteers” in 1982 when he ran for State Senator but the idea didn’t catch on until 1993. He spent 20 years on the Blue Cross Blue Shield Board helping Sun Citians with health insurance. He devoted many years to making Sun City what it is today. George was an avid sports fan especially the Arizona Diamond Backs and any Pittsburgh teams. George was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn of 65 years in 2007. He is survived by son Edward Hartman (Mercy) of Prescott; daughters Patricia Bellamy of California and Kathleen Craig of Oregon. 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren also survive. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 9728 Palmeras Dr., Sun City, AZ. Interment to follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
