Gary Moen passed away at Banner-Boswell Hospital on December 9, 2020, in Sun City, Arizona due to complications of pneumonia. He was 83.
Gary was born on October 8,1937 in Canton, South Dakota, to parents Chris Moen and Louise Fossum Moen. He graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton, in 1955, and briefly attended a South Dakota State agricultural program, in Brookings, followed by service in the Army National Guard. He was Honorably discharged in March 1964. Gary began his lifelong career of crop farming in 1958 till 1993, at which time he and Soffie retired.
He married Soffie Hoines on May 30, 1959. To this union were born 3 children. Gary and Soffie were married 61 years.
Gary’s hobbies included fishing, playing golf, bowling, playing softball, and walking. He and Soffie played on women’s and men’s golf leagues. In addition, he was an avid bridge player. He took pride in reaching Masters level in bridge. Gary was a member of Lands Lutheran Church in Hudson, SD as well as the American Lutheran Church in Sun City, AZ, where he served as usher.
He enjoyed traveling with the family. One of his favorite trips was with Soffie to Norway, seeing relatives and where the Moen family originated. Other trips he especially enjoyed were going to Hawaii and summer vacations at Lake Brant with the family.
Gary is survived by his wife Soffie of Peoria, AZ; daughter Kim Alvarez of Pearland, TX; son Greg Moen of Norfolk, NE; son Jason and daughter-law-law Sue Moen, Chester, SD, sister Doreen Rollag of Beaver Creek, MN, eight grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother Chris and Louise Moen, his brother Claire Moen, Sr. and son-in-law, Rodney Alvarez.
Menke Funeral Home in Sun City, Az is handling arrangements. A celebration of life memorial service will take place in June 2021, time and place to be determined by the family.
