Frederick Silverthorn

November 12, 1937 — December 8, 2019

Frederick Joseph Michael Silverthorn, or “Mike”, as his friends and family called him, passed away on December 8th, 2019. He was born in Westfield, New York and raised in Canton, Ohio by his parents,William Silverthorn and the former Bernadette Duplain. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Canton, Ohio, and had attended John Carroll University. He was a devout Catholic, and as a young man served as an alter boy. He and his wife, Elizabeth Jane “Janey” Goerke Silverthorn, were married on April 21, 1960, and together raised 5 children. Mike served as a proud United States Marine for 8 years. He worked as an electrical engineer and worked both at US Steel in Canton, Ohio, and Johnstown Steel in Johnstown Pennsylvania. He and his wife also owned the College Hill Motel in Rio Grande, Ohio for many years, where they hosted a Special Olympics team every year. Mike retired as a correctional officer at the Noble Correction Institution in Marietta, Ohio. Mike and Jane were fortunate enough to raise their children in Mineral City, Ohio on a 5 acre farm, where there was plenty of land for his children to play, along with room for horses and other animals. Mike loved his wife with all his heart, which was broken when she passed away a few months earlier on September 13th, 2019. Mike loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with them. Mike and Janey traveled the country when they retired, and decided to buy their last home in Sun City, Arizona. They loved going to the casino. Mike was known for his artistic talent, as well as his corny dad jokes. Mike is survived by his daughter Monica Silverthorn; son Michael Silverthorn and daughter-in-law Pattie; daughter Christine Silverthorn; daughter Rebecca Silverthorn; son David Silverthorn; brother-in law Art Goerke ; sister-in -law Sandy Silverthorn and grandchildren Tyler Silverthorn, Spencer Silverthorn, Elizabeth Silverthorn and Joey Silverthorn. He is also survived by brother Larry Silverthorn, sister Barbara Venus, sister Linda Silverthorn, sister-in-law Sandy Silverthorn and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was proceded in death by sister Delores Vaughn, sister Doris Rich and brother- in-law “Buck” Rich, brother Thomas Silverthorn, and brother John “Jack” Silverthorn. Viewing will be held on Friday, December 13th , 2019 from 9:00 am - 10:00 am at Menke Funeral Home. Mass will follow at 10:30 am at St. Joachim and St. Anne Catholic Church in Sun City, AZ. He will be buried with military honors and laid to rest with his wife at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
