Earl Clupper

Earl Coach Clupper, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away on May 25, 2006. He was born in Sodus, MI on Nov. 22, 1924 to Ben and Nellie Clupper. Earl, a former U.S. Marine of WWII, who lived a Spartan life while attending high school - living at a YMCA for the opportunity to attend a college with a football team. He went on to spend over 34 years teaching and coaching football and other sports. Twenty-two of these years were spent at South Mountain High School as Head Football Coach, where he had twice as many victories as defeats. In that span of time, more than 1000 youths played varsity football under the direction of Coach Clupper. Earl was inducted to High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 for his outstanding record. He also received the State Distinguished Service Award Certificate from the National Federation Interscholastic Officials Association for over 25 years of officiating wrestling. Earl called Maryvale home for 40 years, where he had a greenhouse that was always blooming and a kitchen that smelled frequently of his wonderful cooking. After retiring to Sun City, he carried on his tradition of a beautiful, flourishing backyard - even in the gravel lawns of this neighborhood. Earl's later years were spent fishing at Lake Roosevelt, spending time at his place in Pinetop, socializing at the Elk's club, golfing, and continuing to work in his garden. Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Betty June. He is survived by a brother Ben, two sons Michael and Larry daughter 'Cathy;, five grandchildren, one greatgranddaughter and his best friend and love of 19 years, Mary Smith. He is also survived by many very special nieces and nephews. Earl was a very special father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend who will be remembered as always giving of himself, with a gentle spirit and kind heart. A GREAT friend, lending his skills and donating his time as a painter, tile setter, tree trimmer and chef of delicious pancake breakfasts for his family. From the sidelines of Frank Kush Field, to the cherry orchards of Michigan, to the hallways of South Mountain High school, Earl was a dedicated, hardworking, caring man who will be sorely missed and cherished forever in the hearts of many.
