Passed away 28 September 2018 in Peoria, Arizona at the age of 94 years.
Born in Lenox, Tennessee to Samuel Thomas Richardson and Nettie Sue Smith. Doris was deaf at an early age due to scarlet fever and at the age of 6 attended the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville, Tennessee. She learned to be a homemaker and returned to Lenox and Dyersburg, Tennessee to be with her mother.
In 1943 Doris met James Martin Grimes from Arkansas at a deaf function in Memphis, Tennessee. They dated and eventually eloped to be married in Cauthersville, Missouri without her mother’s knowledge. Eventually they traveled to Las Vegas and were married again in April 1944.
James and Doris lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee where they raised a family having four children. In 1959 they moved to Phoenix, Arizona.
Doris is survived by her sons Samuel (Trudy), Jere (Sandy), Thomas (Darlene) and one daughter Carol Cross, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, James and grandson, Jeremy.
Memorial Services will be held 11 October, 2018 at 11:00 am at Menke Funeral Home located at 12420 N 103rd Ave (south of Grand Avenue) in Sun City, Arizona. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery located at 65th Avenue and Northern in Glendale, Arizona.
