Connie (Helen) Young, 83 of Sun City went to be with the Lord on October 22, 2024. Helen was born in Bowie, Texas on April 23, 1941. She moved to Phoenix with her parents and sisters in 1954.
She began her college career at Phoenix College where she was asked to start the Chi Omega Chi sorority at the college and served as the sorority’s first president. During her first year at Phoenix College, she married her husband of 64 years, Ron. In 1962, she graduated with her bachelor’s degrees in education from ASU. Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree, she began teaching at age 21 at Sevilla School in the Alhambra District . Helen taught for 33 years at Sevilla School retiring in 1994. During her tenure at Sevilla School, Helen proudly served as faculty advisor to the school’s student council program. During her years at Sevilla, she also received her master’s degree in education.
As the wife of a police officer, Helen was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 32 Ladies Auxiliary. For a time, she served as State President of the FOP Ladies Auxiliary and chaired one of the Arizona Peace Officers Memorials at the State Capitol prior to the creation of what is now the Arizona Peace Officers Memorial Board.
She was a proud member of First Southern Baptist Church of Sahuaro Ranch since 1966.
Helen’s hobbies included reading, studying the Bible, sewing, Genealogy, and of course spending time with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Broy and Connie Hightower. Helen is survived by her husband, Ron; daughter, Connie Drushel (Don); son, William Young (Jamie); three granddaughters, Nikki Drushel, Shelby Drushel, and Kaitlyn Young; two sisters, Ruth Harper (Jim), Judi Porter (Ray); niece Debbie Chesney (Michael) and many other nieces and nephews.
While Helen had many accomplishments in life, she felt her greatest was making sure her children and grandchildren knew Jesus. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Services for Helen will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at 11am at Menke Funeral and Cremation Center, 12420 N 103rd Ave, Sun City, AZ 85351. Doors open at 10am with a reception to follow the service.
