Calvin Lane 12-11-1930 - 4-11-2018

Cal died at dawn on April 11, 2018, in the arms of loved ones. He will be lovingly missed by Jane his wife of 35 years, his children and step children; Diane Christofferson (Stan Coster), Jim Clark (Lisa), Lisa Bacaner, Pam Geerlings (Mike), Julie Peterman (Phil), Heidi Dubee (Charles), Jonathan Clark (Melissa), 21 grandchildren,15 great grandchildren and a niece and nephew. He was proceeded in death by his parents Anna and Ray, sister Glenys Yff, and son Alfred Clark (Alfie). Cal Lane was born on December 11,1930 in Grand Rapids, MI. He attended Calvin College and received a degree in architecture from the University of Michigan. Cal was licensed to practice architecture in five states. In 1957 after serving in the Army for two years, Cal embarked on a career in architecture with Daverman Associates/URS Corp of Grand Rapids. His career in architecture spanned the period of a labor intensive profession engaging pencil, T- square and eraser, to a capital intensive profession of high technology. Cal began as an architectural designer, rising to Managing Principal coordinating 250 architects and engineers in three Michigan cities. Cal’s “passion” at work was to mentor and challenge talented new designers, shaping new careers. He took great pride participating in their professional growth. His creative fingerprint may be found in the design and flow of many significant places and structures around the U.S. and abroad. One summation from the President of Valparaiso University: “It has been a tremendous joy to work with you over the years. I can’t think of an architectural-engineer colleague with whom I have enjoyed a greater sense of allegiance and satisfaction than you.” Cal taught himself to sail and enjoyed many days on his classic 1967 Chris Craft Sailboat which he carefully restored during the first five years of retirement. He became involved in the communities in which he lived. His interests were varied: reading history, especially WWII, traveling and being with Jane, listening to big-band era music, model building with grandkids, and engaging in their play, tying knots, woodworking and repairing, hiking out west, designing their lake house, writing his memoirs, quiet gatherings with friends, noisy family gatherings, sunrises over the lake and sunsets over the golf course brought joy into his life. Cal’s patience and determination to do things the right way the first time in work and leisure inspired us. Cal traveled the long cruel road of Alzheimer’s with grace, dignity, and his ever-present smile which showed his true nature. It never took away the love he had for his family, especially his wife Jane. Caring for him and loving each other they took the journey together to the very end. We are grateful for the man we loved who showed us how to live.
