Calvin C. Hughes, 85, passed away in Sun City on June 6, 2008 after a courageous battle with emphysema and lung cancer. He was born in Dennis, Mississippi on May 22, 1923, the 3rd child of Oscar and Elizabeth Cornelius Hughes. His family traveled much of his childhood and he spent a great part of it in northern California. Cal enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943 as an airplane mechanic and was planning to become a pilot when WWII ended. A blind date in Fort Worth, TX introduced him to Margaret A. Schumacher and they wed in August of 1950. After moving to Wichita, KS he obtained a degree in Business Administration from University of Wichita and celebrated the arrivals of his two daughters. The family finally ended up in Albuquerque, NM where for 30 years he practiced his livelihood of Real Estate and his passion for golf---excelling at both and winning numerous awards and trophies. In 1993 he came to Sun City to be near his family and, of course, play more golf. He is preceded in death by his parents, older brother Ernie, younger brother J.C. and ex-wife Margaret. Remaining to cherish his memory is his sister, Delilah, and other family members in Mississippi, and his daughters--- Andrea in Phoenix, and Cynthia in Scottsdale. A "feisty" guy, he rallied far more years than some thought he would, considering his illnesses, but not nearly close enough to the 110 years he had promised. Visitation and a brief service will be held at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N. 103rd Ave., on Tuesday, June 17th, beginning at 10am, followed by burial at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., at 12:30 p.m.
