Bryan Kraig Muñoz was born on May 18, 1964 in Phoenix, Arizona to Al B. and Evangeline Muñoz and went to be with the Lord on August 28, 2014. Bryan was raised in Glendale, Arizona where he attended Glendale Elementary School (Unit I) and was a 1982 graduate of Glendale High School. Bryan excelled in athletics at a young age and earned numerous athletic accolades in his youth and through his high school years. Most notably, Bryan earned All-Region selection in football as a defensive back his junior year and All Region and All-State Honorable Mention selections during his senior year as a quarterback in football and as a point-guard in basketball. Bryan’s love for sports continued into college where he attended Glendale Community College (GCC) on a football scholarship. However, an injury cut short his football career but not his passion for athletics. It was at this point that Bryan changed his focus from playing sports to educating and coaching young men. Upon completing his general studies at GCC, Bryan began coaching in the Glendale Union High School District at Independence and Sunnyslope High Schools, where he worked closely with his father Al. He continued his education at Arizona State University (ASU) where he graduated in 1987 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, majoring in Science and Reading. Bryan began his teaching career at St. Simon and Jude Catholic Elementary School in Phoenix where he taught Physical Education and coached various sports. He was then hired to work in the Dysart Unified School District where he taught Jr. High Science at Luke Elementary School and progressed to work in an alternative education program at Dysart High School. Bryan coached various sports at Dysart High and was offered the Head Football position in 1994, where he guided his teams to playoff appearances in 1994 and 1995. In the fall of 1996 Bryan was offered the Head Football position at Superior High School and a reading position at the local Jr. High. In 1997, Bryan’s Superior High football team made an incredible run to the 2A State Championship where his team lost a heartbreaker but finished with an impressive 12-1 record with his only loss coming in the finals. Bryan went on to coach many more highly successful teams at Superior and later Miami High School where he served as the Offensive Coordinator and Head Baseball coach with four playoff appearances during his tenure. Bryan continued on to St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Show Low where he served as Athletic/Activities Director for three years. Bryan’s last teaching and Head Football assignment was at the Arizona Charter Academy from 2011-13 in Surprise. Bryan was selected to coach in numerous All-Star games in recognition of his tremendous coaching success and leadership provided to the young men he worked with throughout Arizona. Bryan is survived by his wife Suzanne, sons, Joshua and Luke, daughters, Sophia and Serena and step-son RJ. In addition to his mother Evangeline, his brothers, Mark, Gregory, and Zachary (Patricia), numerous nieces, nephews and relatives. Bryan is preceded in death by his father Al B., brother, Michael, sister, Valerie and infant brother, Robert. A Funeral Mass celebrating Bryan’s life will be held on September 11, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 6180 W. Utopia Road, Glendale, Arizona 85308, with the burial following at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6290 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, Arizona 85301.
